Athar is an independent Egyptian journalism platform based in Cairo, founded in 2026. We believe that free journalism is the only way to understand what is happening, hold decision-makers to account, and give people the information they have a right to know.
Every policy leaves a mark. Every number carries a story. Every crisis has someone responsible and questions worth asking. We go beyond the event itself: Why did it happen? Who was affected? Who holds the power, and who bears the responsibility? What changed in people's lives as a result?
Our starting point is always the lives and concerns of ordinary people. We report on public policy, rights and freedoms, the economy, public services, and social issues – with particular attention to the experiences of women. Our investigations, reports, and features put human experience at the centre of the coverage, examining root causes, the institutions involved, and paths to change.
We respect all voices and do not exclude or marginalise anyone. But we do not make space for hate speech, incitement to violence, or stereotyping of any group. Freedom of expression, as we see it, comes with responsibility for its impact and respect for the dignity and safety of others.
Professional journalism cannot be separated from ethics and human rights. We are committed to journalistic codes of conduct and professional standards: accuracy, verification, fairness in presenting information, respect for personal privacy, and a clear separation of fact from opinion.
Good journalism starts with a question and requires research, sources, documents, and verifiable data. We cite every claim to its source and are transparent with our readers about what we know for certain, what the evidence supports, and what remains unanswered.
At Athar, we investigate what lies behind events, explain what is hard to understand, analyse the numbers and the trends, open space for debate, and tell stories through image and sound. We give every issue more than one angle, because reality is always more complex than a single narrative.
